My illustrations often come about as part of a larger project, such as branding or a website, but I also create stand-alone artwork for those who want it, or just for me.
Although I’m creating digital artwork, I often start an illustration by sketching ideas on an 80-year-old drawing board with a pencil and layout pad. Once I know where I’m going with it, I move on to a state-of-the-art 24” pen display, giving me the best of both worlds with almost the same hand-to-paper tactility but with vastly improved workflow and no need for any paint, brushes, or markers. I simply choose the pen or brush style I wish to use, pick a colour, and go. Obviously, there’s more to it than that, and regardless of what tools are used, you need the skill to create the artwork, but you get the idea.
When it comes to my style, I’d like to think I don’t really have one, it’s so often driven by the client or the end goal. Instead, I’d like to think my style is more about my approach and attention to detail; understanding how to create a thing is often as important as knowing what thing to create. I enjoy the process of analysing a particular style, brushwork, or method, working out how to recreate it, and then using that technique to create something new.
If you have something in mind or just want to bounce some ideas, please give me a call; I’d love to chat.
